Carrying Home is a deeply personal work rooted in memory, identity, and motherhood. Inspired by my origins in Côte d’Ivoire, the piece incorporates the colors of the Ivorian flag alongside traditional African fabrics, grounding the composition in cultural heritage. The figure carries her child close—both literally and symbolically—holding onto a sense of home, history, and belonging. Through soft gestures and textured layers, the work reflects the quiet strength of motherhood and the enduring connection to one’s roots. More than a portrait, it is a tribute to where I come from—and what I carry with me.

Muriel Elmaleh

Muriel Elmaleh is a contemporary artist whose practice is rooted in expressive abstraction and intuitive, gesture-driven painting. Working with acrylic on canvas, she translates emotion into movement through layered marks, drips, and sweeping gestures, creating compositions driven by rhythm, tension, and physical energy. Beyond abstraction, some of Elmaleh’s figurative works draw from personal memory and her childhood in Ivory Coast, exploring themes of motherhood, resilience, and cultural heritage. Self-taught and instinct-driven, Elmaleh approaches painting as an intuitive and physical act. Her process moves between spontaneity and control, allowing movement to guide the composition.
