Vestiges of the Past

Muriel Elmaleh

$1,672

Created in November 2008, Vestiges of the Past emerges from a period of fragility and emotional intensity. Unfiltered emotion is thrown directly into paint and raw canvas, where darkness, color and gesture collide without seeking resolution. Rediscovered years later, the work has become a trace of a younger self and of an emotional state remembered more through feeling than through detail. Vestiges of the Past reflects on what survives when the past begins to fade: fragments of memory, darkness, and the emotional marks we leave behind.

Muriel Elmaleh

Muriel Elmaleh is a contemporary artist whose practice is rooted in expressive abstraction and intuitive, gesture-driven painting. Working with acrylic on canvas, she translates emotion into movement through layered marks, drips, and sweeping gestures, creating compositions driven by rhythm, tension, and physical energy. Beyond abstraction, some of Elmaleh’s figurative works draw from personal memory and her childhood in Ivory Coast, exploring themes of motherhood, resilience, and cultural heritage. Self-taught and instinct-driven, Elmaleh approaches painting as an intuitive and physical act. Her process moves between spontaneity and control, allowing movement to guide the composition.
