הציור עוסק בנושא של חלימה מודעת — מצב שבו אדם יודע שהוא חולם, ובו בזמן כל מה שמתרחש סביבו נחווה כצלול ואמיתי באופן יוצא דופן, ולעיתים אף עוצמתי ומוחשי יותר מהמציאות הרגילה. הדמות הגברית, שעיניה עצומות, נמצאת כאילו על הגבול שבין שינה לערות. מעליה מופיעה דמות נשית כמעט שקופה, כאילו היא שייכת לרובד אחר של המציאות. שתי הדמויות מתחברות באמצעות קווים זורמים העוברים דרך השיער, האור, הצל והחלל שסביבן. הגוונים הקרירים של כחול ואפור, יחד עם הקווים הבהירים והניגודיים, מחזקים את התחושה של מרחב לילי ומעט לא מציאותי. ובכל זאת, הסצנה נשארת שקטה ומוחשית מאוד — כמו חלום שבזמן שהוא מתרחש מרגיש אמיתי לחלוטין.
