Spirit of the Forest
“The spirit of the forest knows everyone. It knows who laughs the loudest, who is afraid of the darkness that bats love, and which snail always appears last to welcome the first rain.” On a rigid wooden backing covered with natural-toned fabric, dozens of small branches were carefully assembled by hand. Each branch was gathered in the forest and individually selected for its shape, thickness, and the yellow lichen growing on it. At the center is a small Chinese lantern seed pod, adding a delicate touch of color and form from the natural world. The piece is surrounded by a light textile frame with tassels and soft-colored pom-poms, creating a contrast between the delicate textile work and the raw branches gathered from nature. My inspiration comes from the nature that surrounds me, especially in winter, when the grass is fresh, the lichens turn yellow, and the forest is full of life. I create each piece by hand, combining illustrated fabrics, characters, and small natural treasures I collect in the forests of the Golan Heights. Each piece begins with a small element from nature and a connection between different materials. Slowly, a story begins to emerge. Every artwork comes with a postcard. On one side is a story written especially for the piece, and on the other, a space for a personal message to the child. Because each piece grows from an inspiration that might begin with a branch, a color, or a shape, every artwork is one of a kind. No two are ever the same.
