Oded Ben Menachem My painting grows out of years of observing nature, and birds in particular. For me, the bird is not merely a subject for painting, nor simply a representation of beauty. It is a presence—sometimes silent, sometimes calling, and sometimes almost disappearing into the surrounding space. I seek to capture the moment when it shifts from a figure in nature into a sign of the human condition. In my work, I bring together close observation of the living world with a material and expressive visual language. The painted bird, at times identifiable down to its species, encounters abstract fields, layers of paint, incised marks, script-like signs, gold, earth, and weathered textures. The encounter between figurative precision and abstract freedom creates, for me, a space between reality and memory. I am particularly drawn to the tension between presence and emptiness. At times, the bird appears small against a vast, quiet field; at others, it stands before an area of gold, a field of color, or a sign that resists a single interpretation. The space surrounding the bird is as important to me as the figure itself. It allows the painting to breathe—and leaves room for the viewer to enter with their own memories and emotions. My birds carry within them migration, fragility, survival, and freedom, but also loneliness and belonging. Through material, color, and the silence between the marks, I seek to touch that elusive moment when observing nature becomes an act of looking inward
