This intimate watercolor belongs to an early exploration of dogs as both artistic subjects and mirrors of human culture. Dogs have appeared throughout art history in remarkably different roles. Cassius M. Coolidge famously placed them around poker tables, turning them into humorous human characters. Franz Marc painted dogs sleeping and playing, while artists such as Edvard Munch, Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol and Lucian Freud included them in deeply personal visual worlds. David Hockney devoted an entire series of paintings to his dachshunds. Yet the relationship between humans, dogs and art goes much further back. Dogs have accompanied us for thousands of years, becoming symbols of loyalty, companionship, protection and emotional connection.
