Addiction

Medium: Mixed Media Assemblage: Acrylic, markers, metal bottle caps, and natural beeswax on canvas. Dimensions: 50x70 cm | Year: 2026 Artist Statement: "Addiction" is an uncompromising, expressive work that invites the viewer into the turbulent inner space of a soul trapped in a cycle. Through the use of industrial waste and urban debris contrasted with pure raw materials from nature, the piece outlines the dynamic between psychological imprisonment and the potential for redemption. Symbolism and Elements: The Obstructed Gaze: The central figure raises its hands to the heavens in a plea for escape, yet its eyes are made of bottle caps. This is a haunting representation of the addictโs condition: even in moments of reaching for transcendence, their worldview remains distorted and filtered through the "substance" of their addiction (alcohol, gambling, or impulse). The Closed Circle: The frame is composed of dense metal bottle caps, representing the rigid and repetitive boundaries of addiction. The addict often knows no life outside the frame that defines them, creating a sense of suffocation and a lack of true freedom. The Wick and the Wax โ The Path to Change: A candle wick, coated in natural beeswax, runs through the heart of the piece. This is the most critical dynamic element: the wax is not merely a binder; it is potential fuel. The artwork carries within it the physical possibility of combustion. The Element of Combustion: As an integral part of the artwork's interactive nature, several of the bottle caps have been repurposed into functional candle holders, filled with natural beeswax and wicks. This allows for the actual lighting of candles directly on the canvas. The light emanating from within these symbols of "waste" and "addiction" serves as a powerful metaphor: even within the tightest, darkest cycles, one possesses the power to ignite hope and fundamentally transform their reality through a single, conscious act. The Message: The work conveys that freedom from the closed circle is only one "decision" away. Lighting the wick symbolizes the courageous act of burning old bridges and melting the restrictive frame. Much like an addict in recovery, the piece declares that the power to alter realityโto ignite the fire that consumes the past and allows for rebirthโlies solely in the hands of the individual trapped within. "I let my soul tell a story on the canvas... to show that opportunity's power is expressed in a single decision." โ Daniel avraham hadad
