The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps. The B-17 was not inherently suited to the needs of the Israeli Air Force: it was a long-range strategic bomber designed to strike targets deep within enemy territory, whereas the young air force required aircraft for short-range tactical missions. However, the desperate needs of the War of Independence and the severe restrictions on weapon procurement faced by the fledgling state led to the acquisition of every possible aircraft
