The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps. The B-17 was not inherently suited to the needs of the Israeli Air Force: it was a long-range strategic bomber designed to strike targets deep within enemy territory, whereas the young air force required aircraft for short-range tactical missions.
