Smadar Grossman

$466

Early in the morning, I sat on a hillside and captured what I saw directly onto the paper: a pale stream winding through the landscape, and tiny houses just waking to a new day. Transparent layers of watercolor soften the distant ridges, while more concentrated touches of pigment give weight to the vegetation in the foreground. The cool, misty palette creates a sense of quiet, making the painting especially suited to a bedroom, workspace, or hallway. Framing available for an additional fee.

I grew up in a home filled with art, with a painter for a mother. Over the years, I studied in different settings, including the Avni Institute, as well as with painters Dalia Sharon and Iris Kovalio. I work primarily in watercolor, and I am continually fascinated by the way pigments spread, meet, and form unexpected shapes. I work with transparent layers, wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques, using sometimes dry brush and negative painting, often leaving areas of the paper exposed as part of the light in the painting. I find inspiration in many different things: childhood landscapes, old memories, new experiences, music, and more. I love painting outdoors and am drawn to places where I can breathe and connect with my surroundings: fields, hillsides, forest edges, and open paths. The varied landscapes of Israel, along with painting while traveling abroad, bring change and discovery into my work. Color and light are very important in my paintings, and I use areas of color and light to emphasize what caught my attention in the landscape and what moved me at that particular moment. Both watercolor and painting outdoors teach me to pay attention, respond to what is happening, and remain open to what develops rather than trying to control it completely.
